National Chorus of Cuba
Voices from the Heart is honored to host the National Choir of Cuba in a concert on October 30th at 7:00pm at South Church in Portsmouth. They are performing in the U.S. for the first time in over 30 years!
The choir was founded in 1981 by Digna Guerra RamÃrez. It has distinguished itself with outstanding interpretations from very different eras and styles. The choir sings works from the Spanish, English and Italian Renaissance as well as contemporary music, African American spirituals and Cuban music. It has sung in the major concert halls in Cuba as well as on radio and television. It has performed at choral and jazz festivals and contributed to the expansion of choral music throughout Cuba by appearing in schools and major concert halls. International tours have taken the choir to many countries throughout the world, among them Spain, France, Italy, Venezuela, and Canada. Most recently it was the gold prize winner at 12th International Chamber Choir Competition in Marktoberdorf, Germany.
"This trip is a real exchange in every sense of the word" says Joanne Connolly, director of Voices from the Heart, "in July of this year, 110 members of "Voices" traveled to Cuba for a 9 day cultural exchange tour and sang with the National Chorus of Cuba at the El Oratorio de Felipe Neri in Havana. For the final night of the tour, both choruses enjoyed an evening of dining, singing and dancing together. Connolly says "the trip to Cuba and now the Cubans coming to Portsmouth is beyond my wildest dreams!"
