Shadow Studio workshops focus on the magic of photography and through story telling takes participants from the early moments of cinema right up to modern media today.
Shadow Studio is an award winning project that was set up by Joan Alexander, an artist who wanted to share her enthusiasm for photography and shadows with more people. Since then Shadow Studio has grown and is now based between Ireland and UK.
Using simple desktop shadow theatres made out of cardboard participants learn the basics of shadow puppetry through creating their own shadow productions and get the opportunity to perform these as live mini theatre pieces at the end of the workshop.
Beginning with hand made cardboard cut outs we create small scale shadow productions, not forgetting story telling, imagination and using as many simple materials as possible are key ingredients ! We use small lamps to create shadow effects, scissors and card to create shapes, back drops and characters , light filters , different materials like net and feathers to experiment with depth and textures, finding coming up with ideas to narrate or create sound effects.
Shadow stories can be taken home as short movies or digital images for experimenting with simple animation( using animation apps on smart phones or more traditional techniques using stop motion and still images).
