"Las Nuevas Tamaleras" presented by San Antonio Public Library
The popular holiday comedy play "Las Nuevas Tamaleras" is back for one free performance as part of San Antonio Public Library's annual ¡Tamalada! celebration. The one-act comedy, written and directed by San Antonio playwright Alicia Mena, explores the kitchen follies of three women -- unexpectedly guided by the spirits -- during their first attempt at making tamales.
Mena wrote the one-act play in 1990, when it premiered in Houston at the El Teatro Bilingue Latino Playwright's Festival. Since then, "Las Nuevas Tamaleras" has played to sell-out audiences across Texas, New Mexico, California, Colorado and Illinois. The play is included in an anthology of Latina writers by the University of Arizona Press entitled "Puro Teatro" which was published in 1999.
