Introduction to the Implementation and Practice of the Neurosequential Model
The knowledge gained through the Neurosequential Model (NM), has deepened our understanding of our clients, as well as our practice. With the core concepts of the NM as the framework, we have increased our capacity to work with our clients, seeing a decrease in restraints and critical incidents, and increase in relational engagement, self regulation, and staff satisfaction. By helping children and families learn to self-regulate using this approach, they have shown better access to higher-order thinking (executive function skills) and have increased retention and learning potential in multiple contexts
This session is being provided by one of 8 Flagship Sites for the ChildTrauma Academy to provide an overview of the Implementation and Practice of the NM approach.

The NM Implementation and Practise training and awareness session for caregivers, private organizations and Alberta Child and Family Services staff. Please note, you must have completed the Core Concepts training and awareness session first.

1.Gain an understanding of how this approach can be implemented in different settings to help manage the stress response system, improve a child and familys capacity for self-regulation and develop healthy relationships.
2.Illustrate the importance of rhythm and relationship within various settings.
3.Provide an overview of what the NM approach looks like in practice across different contexts

Speakers Bios:
Denise Manderson, M.C.
Denise Manderson is the Program Director for William Roper Hull School at Hull Services. She holds a Masters of Counselling and a Bachelors degree in Human and Social Development. Denise has been at Hull for 20 years. She has spent the majority of her time in the school program working in a variety of roles. The school has been working closely with the Preadolescent Treatment Program (PTP) as the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics pilot programs at Hull Services. Both programs work collaboratively to provide education and training to front line staff, families and persons served around the impact of trauma on brain development. The two programs use the NMT approach for case conceptualization, treatment planning and milieu activity programming.
Shawn OGrady MSW RSW
Shawn brings a great deal of expertise in designing and overseeing treatment programs for children and families, as he draws from his experience in child and family treatment programs at Hull Services over the past 18 years. Shawn is currently the Director of the Preadolescent Treatment Program at Hull Services. He has trained extensively with the Dr. Bruce Perry and the Child Trauma Academy in the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics (NMT) in the area of early childhood trauma and the ways that can impact children and even adults later in life. Shawn is also trained in Multidimensional Family Therapy (MDFT). This is an evidenced based model from the University of Miami and is effective for working with both the youth and family to eliminate chemical dependency and rebuild a strong, healthy, family relationships. Shawn also has a specialty in parental capacity assessments, with a particular focus with families struggling as a result of domestic violence, high-risk child behavior, and complex needs children. He has considerable skill and expertise in the area of crisis intervention and in family counseling, and he draws heavily on his understanding of other treatment and assistance programs to create plans that will help families. Shawn has been qualified as an expert witness in the Provincial Court of Alberta, in the areas of early childhood trauma, domestic violence and parental capacity. Shawn received both his Bachelors and Masters of Social Work with a Clinical Specialization from the University of Calgary and is a registered social worker with the Alberta College of Social Workers.
