WHO SHOULD ATTEND?: Behavioral Health Professionals of Lane County and surrounding areas
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: The popular media often portray the disclosure of abuse as a single, dramatic event followed closely by a rapid process of recovery and healing. However, in the real world children disclose abuse in a variety of ways, across all different time frames, and each child needs his/her unique type of support to move forward after the reporting. Lane County is fortunate to have a direct service and advocacy center for children who are victims of or witnesses to crime: Kids' FIRST Center.
On January 10, 2017, professionals from Kids' FIRST are offering a one-day training for Lane County behavioral health professionals. Topics to be covered will include the Kids' FIRST organization, the basic structure of forensic interviews, the characters of those who commit abuse, and the basics of what a disclosure process can look like. Behavioral health professionals may be called upon to work with children and families at any point from the initial reporting of the abuse, through the legal and reporting processes, to the aftermath of the report. Each of these stages in the process will be discussed along with specific suggestions for how the children and families can be supported. The intention is to assist local professionals in being informed about the disclosure process and learning how to work most effectively with children, youth and families involved in Kids' FIRST services.
WORKSHOP GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: 1. To become informed about services offered by Kids' FIRST Center to include the role of the Mental Health Provider in the process of investigating allegations of child abuse.
2. To become educated about the characteristics of abuse and how manipulation and control plays a role in the victimization of children.
3. To learn about barriers that impact the process of disclosure and how to work with children to identify and overcome the barriers in a therapeutic setting. This will include the unique challenges when the abuse has occurred by a sibling.
4. To become educated about the characteristics of abuse when the abuse is perpetrated by a sibling including the family dynamics of supporting parents who are supporting both a victim and an offender.
