The Creation of Celebrity
British celebrity culture soared into prominence in the 18th century. With startling similarities to our own times, the obsessive fascination of fame and celebrity was prompted by print culture, the generation of new social classes and thriving consumerism. The Georgian equivalent of IT girls were paraded in paint by the great artists of the day, fascinated (and sometimes obsessed) with their beauty and grace - think Joshua Reynolds and Kitty Fisher, George Romney and Emma Hamilton. On this Art Shot, well look at these early seeds of celebrity, before travelling through the ages to get bang up to date with the ground-breaking imagery of celebrity culture today.
