Ghost Investigation of the Hamilton Custom House
Opened in 1860, the Custom House was built by order of the Legislature of Upper Canada to handle the trade in the bustling Port of Hamilton as a major rail center, and a busy Great Lakes port. The building was closed its doors as a government office for good in 1885, and is the present day Workers Arts & Heritage Centre.
Its diverse uses since 1885 include a YWCA, shelter for immigrants, vinegar factory, yarn and macaroni factory as well as a martial arts studio.
Dozens of stories have circulated about the spirits still residing in the Custom House. They include disembodied voices, the word "murder" appearing on the wall of the main floor, interior shutters opening suddenly, sulphur and roasting poultry smells, and a phantom cat.
Doors will open at 8:00 p.m. followed by an introduction and walk through. Spaces are limited to allow the freedom for serious investigators to have access to areas not typically open to commercial tours.
