Maestro, Why Don't You Play A Tango? Astor Piazzolla: The Man and His Music
Join us for "Maestro, Why Don't You Play A Tango? An encounter with Astor Piazzolla, the Man and his Music" - a portrait of one the great artists of the 20th century in story, musical performance and dance. "Astor Piazzolla dared to defy a traditional establishment greater than the State, greater than the Gaucho, greater than Soccer... He dared to challenge the Tango. " A New Yorker for most of his childhood, Piazzolla's birthplace was Argentina and his birthright was the Tango, a musical form that in the 1950's and 60's had lost its appeal to Elvis and the Beatles. In his beloved Argentina, his New Tango was often ridiculed and he was attacked, sometimes physically. Today, the most accomplished musicians in the world perform Piazzolla's music. And many Argentineans now claim him as their "Mozart."
