Dickens' Women
Charles Dickens created some of the most memorable characters in all of English literature. Now you can watch them to come vividly to life when award-winning British character actress Miriam Margolyes brings Dickens' Women, her acclaimed one-woman show, to UMass Lowell on Friday, October 19, in a performance at Durgin Hall, 35 Wilder Street.

"I've been a great admirer of Dickens, a passionate admirer, all my life," says Margolyes, best known to American audiences for her exuberant performance as Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter films. "I want to share with you my relish in his humor, variety and vitality."

As part of this year's celebrations of Dickens' bicentenary, Margolyes is reprising her Olivier Award-nominated production, Dickens' Women, in a world tour that has taken her from Australia to India to the United States. Her Lowell performance is the centerpiece of the closing weekend of Dickens in Lowell, the seven-month celebration of Dickens' travels in Massachusetts. Margolyes will also perform at Boston University's Jacob Sleeper Auditorium on Wednesday, October 17.

In the show, Margolyes transforms herself into two dozen of Dickens' best-loved characters, men as well as women, in what London's Guardian newspaper called "a virtuoso display." Together with the audience, she sets out to discover the man himself, revealing everything from the raucous humor of his characterizations to the darker aspects of his life and work.

Margolyes' extensive credits include Martin Scorsese's The Age of Innocence; Baz Lhurman's Romeo and Juliet; Little Dorrit with Sir Alec Guiness and Derek Jacobi; and BBC's Black Adder with Rowan Atkinson. She also hosted the BBC documentary "Dickens in America."
