-----

An ongoing ensemble experience for all you Kitka workshop devotees and other singing fans who are looking for more opportunities to make beautiful traditional Eastern European harmonies together. The Kitka Community Chorus, led by Kitka's own Janet Kutulas, begins its fourth 15-week season on September 4, 2012!

IMPORTANT: Please email Laura at laura@kitka.org to ensure your place before sending payment.

Alternate payment options, including installment plans, are detailed at www.kitka.org/calendar/communitychorus.html

THE GROUP
The Kitka Community Chorus is a vocal ensemble of 20+ women of all ages (most of whom are just a little bit crazy in love with Eastern European harmonies). We work together on incredible, beautiful Eastern European folksongs and choral arrangements, stopping along the way to hone ensemble skills and study traditional vocal placement, stylistic subtleties (ornaments, phrasing, etc.), and language.

THE MUSIC
Traditional vocal music from Eastern Europe and the Caucasus; exciting choral arrangements from Bulgaria; powerful Croatian harmonies; earthy Russian women's songs; haunting Ukrainian melodies; incredible Georgian lullabies; teeth-gnashing dissonances; asymmetric rhythms; intricate ornamentation; and all the rest!

REQUIREMENTS TO JOIN
For this season there are no auditions to become a member. However, we'd like to ensure that the level of musicianship is such to make it fun and challenging for all of you who have good ensemble singing skills and experience. So we're asking that a few basic criteria are met in order to become a member. If you have questions about whether you'd be a good match for the group, please contact Janet Kutulas at janet@kitka.org.

-Good intonation is essential! Basic pitch-matching skills, the ability to hold a drone note in tune under a melody part, and the ability to sing inner harmony parts in tune are all requirements!

-An ability to produce a forward-sounding Balkan-style vocal quality will be helpful. No previous Balkan singing experience is necessary but would also be helpful. Kitka regularly holds beginning Balkan singing workshops and Kitka singers teach privately. Call the Kitka office at 510-444-0323 for more information.

-The ability to read music is not a requirement but is certainly encouraged as a skill to learn. If you are not a music reader, the ability to learn quickly by ear is essential to level the pace between readers and non-readers. We also ask that you are willing to spend a little bit of time on your own learning the music so that you can come to the rehearsals prepared to sing your parts. Rehearsal part recordings are regularly sent via email.

-We ask that you make a commitment to the 15-week session by paying full membership dues for the season. Membership fees help defray the cost of rehearsal space rental, music preparation, director salary, administrative expense, etc. We try and keep dues low - the cost for one 15-week season breaks down to $15/rehearsal. But as this is not a drop-in group, we've found that it works out most equitably to require full dues from each person regardless of whether it's known by any member in advance if they will have to miss a rehearsal or two.

-Most important requirement: a desire to sing some of the most beautiful music in the world!
