Classical Mandolin Society Concert Series - Philadelphia Mandolin Ensemble and Munier Mandolin & Guitar Orchestra
This concert is the first of three public concerts presented in conjunction with the 2016 Classical Mandolin Society of America Convention to be held in at the Radisson Hotel in Valley Forge, PA, from November 2-6.
This Thursday evening concert features two Philadelphia-based mandolin ensembles: the Munier Mandolin and Guitar Orchestra (founded in 1957) and the Philadelphia Mandolin Ensemble (founded in 2006). Group members perform on a wide variety of instruments, including mandolin, mandola, mandocello, guitar, double bass, hammered dulcimer, percussion, and voice.
The two groups - performing separately and in combination - will present a varied repertoire reflecting a wide range of classical, folk, and world music influences.
One of the concert's highlights will be a one-of-a-kind performance of Vivaldi's Gloria. The Media Chamber Chorale will join the Munier Orchestra and Philadelphia Mandolin Ensemble to present this choral masterwork. The Gloria, typically performed with string orchestra, trumpet, and oboe, will be performed with mandolin orchestra accompaniment. This unique rendering of the Gloria was first performed in 2011 by the Philadelphia Mandolin Ensemble and the Concord Singers of Summit, NJ. In December of 2015, the Media Chamber Chorale and Philadelphia Mandolin Ensemble presented the Gloria at two holiday concerts.
