"I wanted to tell the story of a retiree who seems to have everything except one thing: a sense of connection with others. I love the idea of strangers meeting one another for strange reasons and finding this unusual sense of connectivity". - filmmaker, Leena Pendharkar
GOONGA PEHELWAN SYNOPSIS A documentary that follows India's most successful deaf athlete on his unlikely quest to reach the Rio Olympics 2016 and become only the second deaf wrestler in the history of the Olympics to do so. This is Virender Singh's story, a captivating account of an incredible athlete largely unknown and snubbed by the bureaucracy. Now, as Virender gears up for his third Deaflympics appearance in Bulgaria, this film delves into his life from the bylanes of a small village in Haryana to becoming India's most successful deaf athlete ever and aims at fulfilling the long cherished dream of every athlete that is competing at the Olympics. On the way, it looks at all that he has achieved through a glittering decade and a half long career.
DIRECTORS This film is directed by three young directors from Ahmedabad, who took up the issue for this feature length documentary film, which subsequently led to almost a dozen national stories and brought Virenders story to a wide audience. Incidentally, there was only a solitary national news piece on him before they started working on the film. Working on the film for over a period of 13 months, the film makers researched the issue in depth and aim to persist with the issue by trying to bring about a policy change that brings equitable treatment of athletes with disabilities. The three directors are Mit Jani, Prateek Gupta and Vivek Chaudhary.
