Pushing the boundaries of Japanese musical tradition while respecting its invaluable essence, Nagata Shachu takes advantage of this tension to produce astoundingly forceful and poignant compositions. Come hear their newest pieces as they perform in the Aki Studio Theatre in Regent Park for a series of concerts that reach out to this vibrant community in the heart of Toronto. The weekend will also officially launch their new DVD on which they celebrate the rhythms they feel pulsating in the city they call home.

Cultures and genres clash as the rhythms of taiko, New Orleans parade bands and roots music come together in a unique collaboration between Nagata Shachu and the acclaimed ensemble DRUMHAND. Increasingly known for their innovative performances, DRUMHAND introduces listeners to inventive orchestrations and previously unexplored blends of sound and texture. Hands, sticks and mallets pound out old and new rhythms on weathered skins. Add traditional Japanese drums and instruments to the mix and a rare and exciting performance is sure to result!

Experience a perfect storm of musical energy when Nagata Shachu shares the stage with Shogo Yoshii, a former member of the internationally renowned Kodo drummers of Japan who continues to explore the limitless possibilities of taiko, kokyu (Japanese violin) and shinobue (bamboo flute). As an acclaimed soloist, Shogo has devoted his creativity to the integration of Japanese folk art music with instruments from a wide variety of cultures.This collaboration between dynamic world musicians of the highest calibre is certain to give rise to a truly unforgettable concert.
