Zingaresca Duo consists of Oleg Timofeyev, the pioneer in the revival of the Russian 7-string guitar, and the celebrated Russian-Roma (Gypsy) virtuoso Vadim Kolpakov.
The Italian word zingaresca means "in a Gypsy style," and Zingaresca Duo interweaves the written Russian guitar heritage with the best traditions of the Russian Gypsies, thus blending the sophistication of classical music with the fiery vitality of folk musical expression. For their current projects, Oleg and Vadim use a great range of musical resources, such as rare guitar publications of Mikhail Vysotsky (1791-1837), virtuoso arrangements of Sergei Orekhov (1936-1998), and the original compositions of Vadim's celebrated uncle, Alexander Kolpakov. But since the duo's goal is to bridge an array of different musical styles, their success mostly depends on their own imagination as music arrangers and performers. At times, such as in Vysotsky's compositions, it takes a sensitive ear to distill and exaggerate the Gypsy element from otherwise classical musical fabric. Alternatively, Vadim and Oleg incorporate folk tunes into classical structures, creating a colorful and enjoyable experience.
Dr. Oleg Timofeyev brings his vast knowledge of the Russian guitar tradition, repertoire, and historical practice. He has recorded more than a dozen CD albums featuring the neglected treasures of Russian guitar music, performed innumerable concerts around the world, and is the main organizer of IARGUS, the only annual event in the world solely dedicated to the Russian guitar.
Vadim Kolpakov has been steeped in the Russian Roma musical tradition from childhood, and is equally stunning playing the 7-string guitar, singing, and dancing. He has performed extensively in the USA and Europe, at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Harvard University, the Kremlin, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. In 2008, as a member of the Kolpakov Trio, he joined Madonna on her "Sticky and Sweet" world tour. He is founder and leader of the band Via Romen, and is a director of the Russian Gypsy Traditional Music and Dance ensemble.
This concert is presented in celebration of the 10th birthday of the Museum of Russian Icons, which opened in Clinton, MA on October 15, 2006. Generous support is provided by the Nypro Foundation and ArtScope Magazine.
