Live Music at La Paloma
This special evening of music will converge Karen Almquist and Nina Gerber's skillful and soulful guitar playing, weaving moments of improvisational spark with deep beauty. Karen's style emphasizes acoustic roots with a blues bent, and Nina's impeccable accompaniment brings a poignant and unique expression to each song. Wendy Beckerman will be opening the show with her warm voice, unpredictable melodies, and evocative imagery, adding some harmony vocals to Karen and Nina's performance.
Arrive at 6pm for a potluck dinner. Music will be from 7-9:15pm with a break for dessert.
About the Artists:
KAREN ALMQUIST This is a woman with "gutsy guitar playing, and songs straight from the heart," says acoustic guitar innovator Alex De Grassi about Karen Almquist. Other artists describe her as "soulful," "high quality," and "one hell of a guitar player." She's also got the goods when she gets behind the harmonica or in front of a piano. She plays music because it's in her bones, with influences such as Lightning Hopkins, Ry Cooder, Bonnie Raitt, and James Taylor. Karen has recorded three projects, including Tracking of Time, produced by Nina Gerber. It's a rare pleasure to catch her in live performance, but when you do, her silky voice and bluesy feel are reverberating through a living room, a rural garden, or the rooftop of a friend's New York apartment. Recording artist Kristina Olsen says, "Give her a listen," and you can do so at CDBaby.com
NINA GERBER Nina Gerber has a unique ability to completely free herself within an eclectic range of styles. Presented with folk, country, bluegrass, rock, or blues, she is able to fall into leads which have rare reverence for the true feeling of a song, always emphasizing taste over technical display. She seeks to express through her hands, rather than gain attention, and it is this integrity which makes her expressions worth intent listening.
Whether it's on her own "solo" CDs - collaborations with many of the folk world's finest - or producing, arranging, or performing with countless others, Nina continues to prove with her guitar that some of the truest and most emotional communication requires no words. Still, when combined with the voice of another musician of heart, the result is affecting in an unforgettable way. Visit www.ninagerber.com
WENDY BECKERMAN "Hearing the music of Wendy Beckerman is like tapping into some timeless stream where songwriting and poetry are forever intertwined. Her voice strikes straight at the pressure point of every song, with a minimum of fuss and a maximum of quiet intensity. Similarly, her writing has always married poetic power with a terse literary economy. " - Jim Allen, music journalist and songwriter.
Since releasing her fifth album of original songs, ANGEL IN MY EAR, Wendy has been integrating her passions of music and Mindfulness through YOUR MINDFUL VOICE, an innovative educational organization. Created in collaboration with vocal coach and songwriter Louise Taylor, they co-lead transformational retreats and workshops for professional and amateur singers and speakers.
