WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
Dr. Zalewski is a U of O psychology professor with extensive expertise in the DBT approach. She has agreed to offer a training to local clinicians with an overview of the DBT approach and specific teaching in DBT skills-training. DBT is an empirically-validated clinical model with demonstrated positive outcomes across a variety of age-groups, presenting problems, and intervention formats (e.g., individual therapy and groups). The intention is to give local providers increased knowledge of this clinical model along with an introduction to a few DBT skills such that clinicians could get practice with the skills, thus enabling greater familiarity with the overall model. Surveys of local behavioral health providers repeatedly list Dialectical Behavioral Therapist as an approach around which they would like to gain greater familiarity. Skills-based practices, central to this treatment approach, can be directly taught and have been shown to have value independent from the broader DBT model. While some local clinicians (or agencies) may wish to pursue full DBT training and credentialing, the intent here is to provide information that could facilitate that decision making and that would have value even if the providers were only coaching clients who may have obtained DBT elsewhere.

WORKSHOP GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: 1)Increased awareness/understanding of the DBT approach and supporting evidence. 2)Clear information about specific DBT skills and practice with these skills. 3)Introduce a handful of DBT skills so clinicians get to try them on
