A Jaunt in St James's
St James's is synonymous with luxury and exclusivity. Traversing the streets today, your eyes pop at shop fronts adorned with sharply cut suits and snappy brogues made of crocodile skin, priceless Old Master paintings and magical displays of artistically arranged groceries. Glamorous Henry Jermyn, the Father of the West End and founder of St Jamess, would have been delighted. In the 1660s he provided this luxurious El Dorado for Dukes and Earls who wished to live a la Parisiene. They could pay court to Charles II and saucy Nell Gwynn in the local palace of St Jamess, visit their very own cutting-edge Christopher Wren church, and glide seamlessly from communion rail to coffee-houses where fortunes (and daughters) would be tossed away with a roll of the dice. This aristocratic paradise was a Restoration hotbed of decadence like no other. On this evening tour well visit hidden courtyards, find Pepys most fashionable hell in London, see where Nell Gynn gave birth to Charless IIs children and discuss whether the kings father really was Charles I.
We will finish this tour with a glass or two the St Jamess Conservation Trust party.
