Controversial Marbles: The Parthenon
The Parthenon Marbles, also known as the Elgin Marbles, have been argued over, debated and discussed perhaps more than any other piece of art. These sensationally important 5th century BC sculptures from Athens' golden age are swathed in controversy - be it Lord Elgin's initial removal of the pieces from the Acropolis in Athens, 20th century cleaning scandals, or the big row over their current home. But more importantly, on this Art Shot we'll be peeling back the onion skins to the essence of these works - often forgotten in the general furore. We'll look at the role of the Parthenon and its religious and architectural power, the meaning of the sculptures, and the astonishing skill of Phidias in creating such profoundly beautiful, grand and energetic scenes that have transcended time and - 2,500 years on - still have the power to move visitors of today.
