For many years, Literary Affairs Book Clubs have been reading Indian writers like; Jhumpa Lahiri, Salman Rushdie, Arundhati Roy and Rohinton Mistry to name just a few. We have talked about how the language is often lyrical and mystical carrying great emotional weight. We have also realized that it is often restrained and subtler than western literature requiring us to intuit meaning by engaging deeper with the text.
According to Senior Research Curator Stephen Markel at LACMA, "Beyond basic intelligibility many Indian works feature complex subject matter, symbolic nuances, and/or compositional substructures that require an in-depth explanation to understand their layers of meaning and raison dĂȘtre. Together, these pictorial intricacies form a corpus of sub-textual approaches by artists intended to convey deeper levels of interpretation than are apparent at a superficial glance."
