Healthy identity development can be difficult for patients living in a cissexist and transphobic world, but affirmative psychodynamic therapy can assist patients with the development of a cohesive self. This workshop will provide basic theoretical knowledge for psychodynamic work with transgender, gender non-binary, and genderqueer patients. After introducing participants to language and definitions related to sex, gender, and sexuality, this workshop will cover the application of psychodynamic theory to gender diversity. The focus will be on transference dynamics that may occur when working with this population. Negative transference can manifest early in treatment, particularly around letter writing for hormones and/or surgery, internalized transphobia, and the therapists cisgender privilege. Countertransference regarding gender identity will be explored. The psychological and ethical challenges of working with this population will be discussed. The emphasis will be on self-psychology.
This workshop will use a variety of presentation strategies to aid participants in the application of these standards to clinical practice:
- Lecture - Small & large group facilitated discussion - Theoretical case conceptualization using clinical vignettes
