Ithaka by Andrea Stolowitz
dream of passion productions a one-woman company under the artistic direction of Stefania Indelicato, is once again coming together with Excavation Theatre, also a one-woman company under the artistic direction of Jessica Anne Nelson. Indelicato and Nelson, both started their companies after they became inspired and driven to create their own career opportunities. They first came together to produce their inaugural co-production, an original work entitled After written by Martha Herrera-Lasso which was critically-acclaimed and widely well-received as a part of Havana Theatres 2013/2014 season. Indelicato and Nelson first met in 2011, when Nelson cast her as part of a collection of plays at the Vancouver Fringe Festival that included, an abbreviated version of Lucia Frangiones Leave of Absence, that Nelson was directing. They are both ecstatic to be working together again on such an important, socially-relevant and exciting project, this Canadian Premiere of Ithaka by Andrea Stolowitz.
Synopsis: Marine Captain Elaine Edwards has just returned from her latest tour in Afghanistan but this time things are different - home doesnt feel right and nothing makes sense. After a blow up fight with her husband propels her to skip town, she undertakes an Odyssean journey through the American landscape battling her monsters, trying to find her way home.
Cast: Yoshié Bancroft (Pride and Prejudice, Arts Club; Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, Belfry Theatre); Brent Hirose (Heathers, Gently with a Chainsaw; Corpus Christi, Ghostlight Projects), Stefania Indelicato (White Hot, Kindred Entertainment; After dream of passion prod. & Excavation Theatre), Adam Lolacher (Good People, Playwrites; Glory of Living, Sterling Studio), and Desiree Zurowski (Rogue, Greenroom Ent.; Big Eyes, Weinstein Company).
Stolowitzs work draws from interviews with veterans and their families. As well, Stolowitzs plays have been developed and presented nationally and internationally at theatres such as The Long Wharf, The Old Globe, The Cherry Lane, and New York Stage and Film. The LA Times calls her work heartbreaking and the Orange County Register characterizes her approach as a brave refusal to sugarcoat...issues and tough decisions.
Andrea is a founding member of the playwrights collective Playwrights West (www.playwrightswest.org) and works as a collaborating writer with the award-winning devised theatre company Hand2Mouth Theater (www.H2M.org). She is a resident company member at Artists Repertory Theater (www.artistsrep.org).Andrea is the recipient of a DAAD research grant which supported her 2014-15 residency in Berlin, Germany at English Theatre Berlin/International Performing Arts Center. She is creating a play for their 2016 season. An MFA playwriting alumna of UC-San Diego, Andrea has served on the faculties at Willamette University, The University of Portland, Duke University and UC-San Diego.
Due to the subject matter of the play, the team has partnered with Wounded Warriors Canada (WWC), a non-profit organization that supports Canadas ill and injured Canadian Armed Forces members, Veterans, and their families, through a wide range of national programs and services, providing a spectrum of care that is focused on mental health and, particularly, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder - one of the major challenges faced by the lead character in Ithaka. National Partnerships Director of WWC, Corporal David Macdonald says, Having served in Afghanistan with the Canadian Infantry, this portrayal of a US Marine coming home from war strikes an all too familiar tone with me. Andrea Stolowitz captures it completely with an ending that will leave the audiences feeling what it means to be a veteran now home from war.
