Macho Like Me
MACHO LIKE ME, written by and starring Helie Lee and live show directed by Sammie Wayne. Macho Like Me will open on Saturday, July 2nd and will run through Saturday July 23rd at Santa Monica Playhouse located at 1211 4th Street as a guest performance.
MACHO LIKE ME is the true account of Helie Lees remarkable six-and-a-half months journey living life as man.
"It's absolutely delightful to see her look beyond the mask of certainty she had grown accustomed to wearinglearning how to laugh at herself, as well as those around her. The show, superbly directed by Sammie Wayne, is a fresh amalgam of video segments and narration. Lee is not an actor, but she wins us over immediately with an unassuming presence. As she describes her planwhich involved hiring pals Anna and Katie to record her travails for a documentary filmwe meet her friends and family onscreen. Lee interacts with them, and the large video screen center stage becomes our window into her world. Then as she begins her life as a man, the production integrates Anna and Katie's footage. Wayne and Lee make terrific use of these video elements: graphics that include Lee's growing list of "guy rules," candid segments that allow an adorably funny Lee to look at herself through new eyes, and touching scenes that explore the price men pay for living in a man's world. This may not have been the kind of groundbreaking political statement as a feminist Lee originally wanted to make. But this intimate, personal tale speaks loud and clear, and makes us laugh along the way. And, after all, "The personal is political." --Backstage Review
