One Health: What does IH have to do with it? with Peter Rabinowitz, MD, MPH (March 11, 7:30 am - 9:00 am)
Peter Rabinowitz MD MPH will describe the emerging concept of One Health that explores the linkages between human, animal, and environmental health including: 1) zoonotic infectious diseases at the human-animal interface; 2) animals as "sentinels" of environmental health hazards; and, 3) Occupational health of animal workers.
Many emerging infectious diseases are first occurring among workers with close contact with animals, whether on farms, in veterinary settings, or in food production. There is a need for enhanced biosafety for such workers, based on IH sampling and control principles for biological exposures, and greater emphasis in general on the occupational health of such workers.
Dr. Rabinowitz directs the Center for One Health Research, which serves as an incubator and organizer of research, training, and clinical activities at the University of Washington related to the human-animal-ecosystem interface. He is the director of a new NIOSH funded training initiative at UW called "Occupational Health at the Human Animal Interface (OHHAI)".
