Beyond the Basics Session 4- Loyalty Discount $125 for all five weeks instead of $150! Includes one kid aged 10-18 and their accompanying adult
Join Session 4-the FEb-March session-of Jen Cote's unique, alternative, experiential, hands on, social thinking, outdoor learning adventure at Maine Forest Yurts!
We will be going Into the Forest for a full day (10-4) of science and more. This session will include: winter related science, invention and winter survival scenario challenges, and some Survivor style fun challenges and some Odyssey of the Mind style spontaneous challenges. We will be trying a variety of creative pursuits while warming up in the yurts or log cabin throughout the day: effective debating, strategy and other games, group creative storytelling, art, knot tying-all will be options! Outside we will have opportunity for nature photography (need your own camera), birding, orienteering challenges, and tracking. We will continue to take the scientific and collaborative approach to activities. At least an hour of winter physical recreation will be an option for each child: such as snowshoeing, cross country skiing, hiking the trails, or free winter exploring. Or one can opt for a less active pursuit. Parents assist in supervision as the groups go separate ways during this free choice time. PLUS: Ongoing hands-on building projects, including oufitting MFY with some bird feeders, hooks, and blankets. Emphasis is on developing a positive community! Fire! Stories!
This experience is designed to challenge and support the attentive, active, enthusiastic learner who: enjoys experiential AND in-depth education, tends to persevere in challenges-even if they may be cautious at first or need support, aged 10-18. Readiness for this really focuses on attention; enthusiasm; stamina; but mostly:h
**** The ability to receive and give feedback respectfully (or readily accept coaching to do so); appreciation for nature, learning, and this experience; and eagerness for facing challenges-- these are required to participate.*******
Parents are integral part of the program, participating, helping, and teaching-making it all possible! We encourage kids to participate or observe activities at their comfort level, coaching them toward personal growth and accountability to the group. We encourage parents to support their child's unique needs, taking breaks or coaching on the side as is helpful.
Jen is an alternative education teacher with degrees in Biology, English, and Sociology; and additional trainings in Gifted and Special Needs education, therapeutic recreation, Collaborative Problem Solving, a variety of modalities that address sensory and other issues, and social skills building. An LCSW whose practice specialized in children, families, and groups; particularly anxiety and building interpersonal skills; you will find that I am comfortable supporting many kinds of students and focus on developing our positive social community very directly. I have been homeschooling my son and groups of children for 12 years. Page Crowley coteaches, represents Maine Forest Yurts, and keeps us all on track. Bob Crowley is a retired certified Maine High School Physics teacher and forester. He drops in from time to time leading some spectacular learning experiences that are unforgettable. I am so grateful to Bob and Page for their collaboration with me creating these awesome learning opportunities, challenges, and experiences for us all.
This ticket buys the CORE GROUP PLAN- This ticket is good for all 5 weeks of session TWO: 2-22, 2-29, 3-7, 3-14,including community wide Survive and Thrive Day 3-21. The community day is open to ages 8 and up, so friends can come experience our learning adventure! Public schoolers often come, too. Ticket includes one free accompanying adult (required without special arrangement, and exceptions only as staffing allows. Varies by session.)
Please arrive by 10am, we have tons of fun and only a day! As this is an experiential learning adventure emphasizing growth of community, sometimes (okay, often!) we run over the end time of 4pm to finish the group processing portion of our last event. If we are at another location on the property than the log cabin, we will leave a note. Feel free to join our circle and participate or leave early to manage your family's schedule as you need to make another appointment.
Please note, this program costs only cover site rental. All teachers and materials are volunteers. As ticket sales determine if each session is able to occur, there is no possibility for refund. Some sessions there are by-the-week options.
Session 5 starts immediately after this one! During session 5, we will begin our spring emphasis on citizen science projects and collaborations with various agencies! Kayaking if possible by then, too.
