The Spirit Sings
9-member vocal ensemble The Rookery, praised for "luminous quality, assiduous balance, and obvious fluency" by Chicago Classical Review, presents a 70-minute program of sacred and spiritual a cappella works selected specifically for the beautiful St. Clement acoustic. Representing many places and centuries, repertoire includes Spanish royal chapel music, modern settings of the Song of Songs, Sheremetev's stirring Russian Orthodox hymn "Now the Powers of Heaven," American spirituals including Down to the River, Poulenc's Four Little Prayers of Francis of Assisi, and Franz Biebl's Ave Maria, a perennial hit made viral again by Cantus and Chanticleer last month.
