In 1707, at age 21, young composer George Frideric Handel moved to Italy and wrote Clori, Tirsi e Fileno, a stunning cantata that experimented with musical and dramatic forms. The work was never staged and, when the composer died, it was thought lost to history.

In 1960, a single complete copy was discovered in Germany. From August 20 - 31, Volcano and Classical Music Consort reimagine Handel's love-triangle for Toronto audiences and present its Canadian premiere at the iconic Gladstone Hotel.

With a modernized English libretto and a live Baroque orchestra playing period instruments, three singers will seduce their audiences as they travel through the hallways, bedrooms, bathrooms and bars of the Gladstone Hotel exploring the inevitability and the impossibility of love.

$30 for youth under 30, seniors and CAEA/CADA members with valid ID.
All youth, senior, and CAEA/CADA ticket holders must present valid ID at the box office to gain entrance to the performance.

Ticket buyers will be assigned a specific character the night of the performance, and will remain with that character for the duration of the opera. Requests for a specific character will be accommodated by the box office based on availability. Audience members with a character preference should arrive early to guarantee their selection. The characters are:

CLORI - soprano. The object of affection. Hard to pin down.
PHIL - countertenor. Making his move. Sings like an angel.
THERESA - soprano. Loyal. A fireball.

Guests of A Synonym for Love can pre-purchase a prix fixe dinner from The Gladstone Hotel to be enjoyed before or after the performance. Seatings are at 5:30pm or 8:30pm and include an appetizer, a main course, and a dessert selected from the Gladstone's full menu.
