V-Day Fort Lauderdale "The Vagina Monologues" 2016
Note: There is no 3 p.m. Saturday show.
Sixteen women from across Broward County have come together under the direction of Bryan C. Wilson to present two benefit performances of "The Vagina Monologues." The award-winning episodic play, based on playwright and V-Day Founder Eve Ensler's interviews with more than 200, celebrates women's sexuality and strength with humor and grace. Each of the monologues deals with an aspect of the feminine experience. All of the proceeds will benefit Covenant House Florida in Fort Lauderdale and The Pride Center's Women With Pride in Wilton Manors.
This is a show you'll long remember, so please come for a great time and to support Covenant House Florida, The Pride Center's Women With Pride, V-Day and women in general!
The performances will be 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28, at the Beach Community Center, located at 3351 NE 33rd Ave. in Fort Lauderdale. Please note: There is metered parking at and around the center. Please be sure to bring $1.50 in change. Otherwise there is a pay-by-phone option.
The start times accommodate a 30-minute pre-show, during which there will be music, a short video, raffle tickets for sale and the show introduction. Beverages and snacks will be available for purchase. Cash only.
THE CAUSE Every year, college and community groups all over the world produce benefit performances of "The Vagina Monologues" through V-Day, a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls (VDay.org/about.html). The idea is to support the female-empowering global movement and to raise money for like-minded organizations in the communities where the show is being produced.
LOCAL BENEFICIARIES Covenant House Florida is a non-profit emergency shelter serving runaway, homeless and at-risk youth, including teen parents and their babies. In operation since 1985, the shelter provides nearly 100 beds between its Fort Lauderdale and Orlando locations, street outreach, aftercare, crisis counseling, recreational activities, and programs and projects, such as GED classes, substance addiction help and long-term transitional living assistance. Although Covenant House Florida is one of the largest private agencies of its sort in the state, both shelters have waiting lists due to lack of funding. Visit CovenantHouseFL.org.
Women With Pride is a program of The Pride Center in Wilton Manors catering to LBT women. Its offerings include support groups, panel discussions, speakers, social events, a book club, basketball, movie nights, art shows, a family series, a holistic health series, an LBT health directory and service linkage.
