************
Lakeshore Syrian Connection is a group of families from the Lakeshore West community of Toronto, Ontario, including Mimico, New Toronto, Long Branch, and Alderwood. We have diverse backgrounds and have joined together to support a Syrian refugee family through a transition to life in Canada. As parents, our hearts break while we watch Syrian families risk their lives to leave their homes with little but the hope of finding safety for their children. It is for this reason that we have committed to an effort to raise funds to sponsor one of these families.
As a sponsorship group we are responsible for raising $30,000 for a small family's first year in Canada. Additionally, we will also provide community support by helping this family set up a home, access education and find employment.
We are working with JIAS Toronto, a Sponsorship Agreement Holder, whose mandate is Connecting People with Community. By partnering with JIAS, we have access to a full range of resources, integration services and expertise that will help ensure that our sponsored family will have an even greater chance of success as they begin their new lives in Canada.
When we first launched in October we never imagined how much support we would have from this community. Our initial goal was to raise $27,000 to support a family of 4. In just a few months we have doubled that and have now raised approximately $60,000.
The group has discussed many options as to how to use the additional funds and although we have yet to make a final decision, we know the situation is dire and our intention is to help as many people as possible as fast as we can.
To build on our current momentum, we will be fundraising until February 29, 2016 with a new goal of $75,000. There are lots of great events coming up over the next month and we encourage you to participate to help us reach that goal.
Family Fun Skate, Saturday, January 23 Comedy Night on Lakeshore, February 6 Valentine's Day Dance, February 12 (more details to come) In addition, we are now promoting our furnishings website and accepting donations for grocery cards, TTC tokens and excellent used condition household furnishings and appliances.
We would like to thank our volunteers, our very generous donors, and everyone who has shown support for Lakeshore Syrian Connection. This would have never been possible without the help from each and every one of you.
