Evening With Andy Statman & Death of a Salesman in Yiddish
At 8PM: A special performance by NEA National Heritage Fellow clarinetist/mandolinist Andy Statman. Statman was a disciple of the great klezmer clarinetist Dave Tarras and has gone on record pioneering explorations of Hasidic music as well as bluegrass. Statman will perform with long-time collaborators Marty Confurius (bass) and Larry Eagle (percussion). A dance set will follow the concert.
Come at 7PM for Death of a Salesman in Yiddish (Toyt fun a seylsman)! A special performance of selected scenes from Arthur Miller's classic play, translated into Yiddish by Joseph Buloff. Performed by Avi Hoffman, Daniel Kahn, Suzanne Toren, and Lev Herskovits. With re-translated English subtitles by Daniel Kahn. Followed by a panel, moderated by Nahma Sandrow, renowned scholar and translator of Yiddish theater, about language, translation, contemporary and historic context, as well as other issues of interest to presenting Yiddish theater in the modern era.
