Les Bohémiens: Gypsy Dance
The first dances were sacred rituals performed to please the gods and express the supreme truths in the magic of movement. These were temple dances where the female priestesses worshiped different aspects of the Divine through the elaborate language of mime and gestures. This Sunday at the Shelter Theater, acclaimed dancer Joana Gea combines such "sacred dance" with the fiery "gypsy dance", accompanied by the live gypsy music of Tzigane.
Born in Barcelona, Spain, Joana Gea specializes in middle-east, North African and gypsy dance. In 2013 she travelled to Romania and Istanbul in order to establish direct contact with the Roma communities of these regions. This year in San Miguel, she teamed up with the passionate "gypsy jazz" musicians Almitri Tzigane and Israel Chávez. Their current project, titled "Les Bohémiens," is presented with the aim of spreading the culture of the Roma people as well as the dance of different regions including: Turkey, Romania, Spain, North Africa, and the Middle East, proving to audiences that, as Martha Graham said, "Dance is the hidden language of the soul!"
