This course is an in depth look at the key 'isms' of the modern and postmodern age from an art historian and an artist's perspective. Across 4 Saturdays and several London galleries including the National Gallery, Tate Modern, Tate Britain and a commercial gallery, we will go through the key movements and styles in chronological order. These will include: Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, postImpressionism, Fauvism, Cubism, Futurism, Constructivism, Suprematism, Neo-Plasticism, Dadaism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism, Pop, and postmodernism
Lecturer Wendy Elia trained at St Martins School of Art, London and has exhibited widely. She was a finalist in a number of national and international competitions, including 4 times at the National Portrait Gallery, The Sovereign European Art Prize, and The Threadneedle Prize. Her work is held in several public permanent art collections across the country. In 2012 she was commissioned to paint a portrait of a local sports person as part of the cultural Olympiad in Weymouth and Portland. She recently exhibited in a group show alongside Sarah Lucas, Miranda Whall and others.
Lecturer Marie-Anne Mancio trained as an artist before gaining a D.Phil from the University of Sussex for her thesis Maps for Wayward Performers: feminist readings of contemporary live art practice in Britain. She is an accredited NADFAS lecturer and has lectured on art, architecture, and cultural studies for The City Literary Institute, Tate Modern, The Course, Art in London, London Art Studies, London Art Salon, Dulwich Picture Gallery, the Nth Degree Club, and many private art societies on subjects as diverse as Who's Afraid of Contemporary Art?; Russian Modernism 1900-30; The Femme Fatale; Love, Marriage and Desire in Art; Caravaggio and Redemption. She was commissioned to write and present an online course How To Read Paintings for Pearson Love to Learn & City Lit. Marie-Anne has also written for several art publications (see art writings). Fluent in Italian and French, she lectures on art history study trips abroad to Venice, Florence, Rome, Perugia, Assisi, Amsterdam, Paris, Madrid, and St. Petersburg.
