Friday November 6 -- Norton and the European Natives
It was quite a happy surprise to see how quickly the tickets to our first Grand Tasting sold. Within a day it was waiting-list only...
So we've decided to extend the theme, with a Grand Tastings in celebration of a successful Harvest 2015. We've come up with a wine lists calibrated to the twin causes of Pure Enjoyment and a Deeper Understanding of Wine, and added to the program an element we confess we should have thought of at the first Grand Tasting: Nosh! (small plates, but expertly prepared - we're confident the New and Improved Grand Tasting will make for a very satisfying dinner excursion.)
Our Theme:
The well-known Norton is one of our last grapes to harvest, which affords us some time to think, as the fruit deepens in color and intensity of flavor, just how will we craft our own expression of the Official Grape of Missouri?
In reply we've assembled representative Missouri Norton's from some of the state's major producers going back as far as 1998. We're not so limited though, as to think that Norton should be considered only in the context of its immediate local peers. We feel, rather, that to really understand a grape as the standard-bearer of its home country, we should look at other varieties that bear the same distinction.
Our Grand Tasting explores these Missouri wines in the context of other wines that had to travel to find a home, with an exposition of California Zinfandel (Joseph Swan, Turley and Martinelli round out our short list), as historic and perhaps stylistic guides for the future of Missouri Norton. We'll throw a couple curve balls too - a native grape from Macedonia, and a Pinot from Williams-Selyem, who for many showed the world that California Pinot wasn't a novelty, but a truly age-worthy wine.
Can Vox do the same for our American Heritage vines? That's certainly our goal. Come join us as in our quest!
