Iceman Cometh by Eugene O'Neill
The play opens in the summer of 1912 in Harry Hopes Saloon. Most of the characters are alcoholic losers. As you meet the seventeen characters you discover their pipe dreams; this is the important theme of the play. For most of the characters, their pipe dreams involve reminiscing about their past glory days, and they are pretty certain that they will relive them again soon. Larry, a cynical former anarchist says to the bartender Rocky "The lie of a pipe dream is what gives life to the whole misbegotten mad lot of us, drunk or sober." The play itself was written in 1939 and produced for the first time in 1946. Since then many people claim that this is one of O'Neill's past productions because some many people can relate to these characters circumstances. How many people have been in a bar dreaming of what could of been, how did they get to the place that they are at, or I have a dream of making a better life? then you drown your depression in a glass of whiskey? Even if you have never been at a bar at that state of mind, you can relate to the Iceman himself mister Theodore Hickman, a traveling salesman. He is the only sober one in the bar, he explains his sobriety "The only reason Why I've quit is - Well, I finally had the guts to face myself and throw overboard the damned lying pipe dream that'd been making me miserable.
See for yourself what happens when a bunch of drunks in a bar are shaken from their pipe dreams from the Iceman that comes into Harry Hopes Saloon.
