Shahre Gheseh: A play by Bijan Mofid
In the Iranian musical play Shahre Gheseh (City of Tales), an elephant walks into a town, falls down, breaks his tusk, and asks for help. The town's other animals debate what to do next as the elephant waits and voices his opinions. A parable about the way a strange visitor can or can't survive in a society with fixed ideas.
As written by acclaimed Iranian playwright Bijan Mofid, Shahre Gheseh is a painful tale of characters whose realities are inhibited by enforced practices, values, and superstitions. Created in the narrator's mind's eyes, the characters are accustomed to their own world of trickery and deception. And one day, when a newcomer enters, these characters quickly transform him into their own world -- the world of Shahre Gheseh.
One of Iran's most popular plays before the country's 1979 revolution, Shahre Gheseh is being restaged in a theatrical new version. A rare version of an acclaimed play -- a work that's both sad and fun, and performed in Farsi!.
