Gamelan Sekar Jaya Music and Dance of Bali with Special Guest Artist I Wayan Suweca
The Bay Area ensemble GAMELAN SEKAR JAYA appears at the Berkeley JCC to offer up a festive performance of Balinese music and dance, complete with gongs, flutes, metallophones of bronze and bamboo, fluttering fingers, and the powerful expressions of golden-clad dancers.

This special afternoon concert will celebrate the brilliant musicianship and artistry of I Wayan Suweca, one of Bali's preeminent maestros, and Gamelan Sekar Jaya's founding music teacher of 1979. Suweca, who joins Sekar Jaya as Guest Music Director, along with Ni Luh Andarawati (Guest Dance Director) will lead the ensembles in classic and contemporary works from Bali's great traditions in this intimate family-friendly theater. Along with an extraordinary range of music and dance showcasing 3 different gamelan ensembles, the show will feature reflections from Pak Suweca about his lifelong work as a Balinese music master both here in the West and in Bali. We invite you to this celebratory performance, and to see for yourself why Gamelan Sekar Jaya's artistry has recently been described as "A heavenly din and transcendent sound from the heart of the world." - Allen Ulrich, London Financial Times, June, 2014.
