The RASC (Royal Astronomical Society of Canada) Toronto Centre runs a program for adults and teenagers who are interested in astronomy. The NOVA program (New Observers to Visual Astronomy) is a free 6-week introductory course that is designed to show the novice astronomer the wonders of the night sky and how to enjoy them. No experience or telescope required.

NOVA 2015 classes will be offered in two different sessions at separate venues this year:

Session 1: At York University (Petrie Science and Engineering building (PSE), classroom #317) starting Thursday, October 22, 2015 at 7pm sharp and continuing for six consecutive Thursdays, ending on Thursday November 26, 2015. TTC/GO/YRT-friendly and accessible location. Parking in Arboretum arcade $2.50/hr.

Session 2: At the RASC-owned and operated David Dunlap Observatory (DDO) in Richmond Hill starting Thursday, November 5, 2015 at 7pm sharp and continuing for six consecutive Thursdays, ending on Thursday, December 10, 2015. Free parking. Please note that the DDO is not an accessible location.

* Note: You are on the registration page for Session 2 at the David Dunlap Observatory. Click HERE to register for Session 1 at York University.

NOVA will be six lessons, as follows:

Week 2 (Nov 12): Sun, Earth, Moon, tides, eclipses, our Solar System, the Planets, meteor showers, and comets.

Week 3 (Nov 19): How to Observe the Solar System, track sunspots, and draw lunar features.
Stars (formation, life, end). Constellations. Planispheres. Learning the night Sky. Variable stars.

Week 4 (Nov 26): Milky Way. Deep sky objects. Nebulae. Star clusters. Galaxy formation and types of galaxies. How to observe galaxies and galaxy clusters. Astro-sketching. Introduction to Messier and RASC observing programs.

Week 5 (Dec 3): Astronomy Gear. Binoculars, telescope types, selection and use, observing logs, equipment, observing sites, more drawing skills, and an introduction to light pollution.

Week 6 (Dec 10): Cosmology. Black Holes, Dark Matter. Universe formation. Course wrap up.

Classes will be 2 hours in length, with a 15-minute break in the middle. As skies and volunteers permit, we will also provide telescope and night sky viewing for 60 to 90 minutes after each of the classroom sessions. Come learn about and explore the night sky with us!

During the course participants will be encouraged to pursue the RASC's Explore the Universe Observing Certificate to gain practical experience in locating and observing astronomical objects.

Class size is limited to approximately 50 participants. Recommended minimum age for participants is 12 years old. Children under 13 years old must be accompanied by an adult during each session.

We look forward to introducing and welcoming you to the wonderful world of astronomy and visual observing!
