CALIFERMENTATION
The first wine fair showcasing California's rising stars in natural winemaking. Come taste the huge variety of wines and meet the winemakers at America's original natural wine bar.

A Natural Wine Love Story

Way back in 1979, when disco reigned, someone was about to shoot JR and Three Mile Island threatened to radiate the Northeast, the Coturri family bucked the going convention and farmed their vineyard on Sonoma Mountain without using any synthetic products. This philosophy carried over to the winery and while laboratories were creating designer yeasts faster than you could have said "Givenchy," they said "no thank you," and made wine without any additives.

Around the same time, Nicolas Joly in Savenniéres and the "Gang of Four" (not the band but Guy Breton, Jean Foillard, Marcel Lapierre, and Jean-Paul Thévenet in Beaujolais), had similar ideas. Influenced by Jules Chauvet, the pioneering French enologist and Rudolf Steiner, who formulated biodynamic viticulture, these winemakers jump started natural winemaking. Others followed suit in Europe throughout the 80's and 90's, yet the Coturris were still pretty much on their own in North America. A couple of others made wines organically but they were relegated to the sidelines, deemed acceptable for people who had severe sulfur allergies but no other humans. This probably tells us more about the times than the wines.

Louis Dressner and Jenny & Francois ushered in a second "Fin de Siècle," revolutionizing the import market with European producers that practiced organic and biodynamic viticulture, hand harvested and worked exclusively with indigenous yeast. As the first natural wine bar in the United States, Terroir in San Francisco exposed countless people to this new wave of ancient winemaking. Among the converted were several aspiring winemakers, such as Chris Brockway, and a generation of natural winemakers in California was born.

Broc, Arnot Roberts and Wind Gap have gone on to teach and influence scores of others. Now, both young and old winemakers are taking an un-deflated ball and running with it, putting their own stamp on natural wine. California wine has never been this exciting. Many of our producers can easily share the stage with their acclaimed European compatriots and you'll have a chance to find out for yourself on November 14th at Califermentation.

10% of all proceeds will be donated to Bay Area Hunger.
