Kairos: A Consort of Singers Fall Choral Concert, "Water Music"
Kairos presents a special concert of a cappella works entitled "Water Music", featuring a wonderful selection of sacred and secular a cappella choral works from the Medieval to the present, all depicting different themes of water: tumultous (and sometimes deadly) seas, calm, peaceful lakes and streams, redemptive baptisms, flowing rivers, life-sustaining sustenance . The centerpiece of the performance is a stunning choral work by contemporary Finnish composer Jaakko Mäntyjärvi entitled Canticum Calamitatis Maritimae, which the composer dedicated to the memory of those who perished in the shipwreck of the Estonia on September 28, 1994. The work combines a "folk song" soprano solo (very loosely based on the "Nearer, my God, to Thee" hymn) with Latin texts from the ancient Requiem mass, both whispered and sung by the chorus.

The concert will also feature "water" works by Barber, Kverno, Brahms, Monteverdi, Lasso, Palestrina, and others, and will conclude with a beautiful set of spirituals. A concert not to be missed!

Kairos: A Consort of Singers (Dr. Edward Lundergan, Artistic Director) is a select vocal ensemble dedicated to the performance of unaccompanied choral literature from the Medieval to the present.  The group is Artist-in-Residence at Holy Cross Monastery in West Park, New York, and performs in the Hudson Valley and beyond. Kairos regularly performs the church cantatas of J. S. Bach as part of its popular Bach Cantata Series, now in its tenth year. Kairos also presents historically-informed performances of the great Baroque choral works each fall, including the Monteverdi "Vespers," Handel's "Dixit Dominus," Purcell's "King Arthur", and Bach's "Mass in B-Minor" in November 2014 in celebration of Kairos' 20th anniversary. Kairos is celebrating its 21st anniversary as the premiere vocal ensemble of the Hudson Valley and in 2013 released its second CD, "The Valley Sings," featuring choral music by Hudson Valley composers. The CD was released on the MSR Classics label is currently available at www.kairosconsort.org, as well as at a variety of online vendors, including Amazon and iTunes.
