Cubano Y Boleros
"Son Cubano" is a style of music and dance that originated in Cuba and gained worldwide popularity. A large number of former black slaves, recently liberated after the abolition of slavery in 1886 went to live in the slums in Havana; many of them brought their Afro-Cuban Rumba traditions. The emergence of "Son" significantly increased the interaction of African and Hispanic cultures. The "Son" was born at the end of the nineteenth century and acquired its distinctive musical personality in Havana in the 1920s. Come and experience passionate Cuban music in San Miguel at Shelter Theater August 22nd and 29th. The "Son Cubano" merges an adapted Spanish guitar, harmony, and lyrical traditions with Afro-Cuban percussion and rhythms. Ignacio Piñeiro, the founder of the famous Cuban band "Septeto Nacional" asserts that, "Son is the most perfect entertainment for the soul!" Popularization began in earnest with the arrival of radio broadcasting in 1922, which came at the same time as Havana's attraction for Americans evading Prohibition laws. The city became a haven for the Mafia, prostitution and gambling, and also became a second home for influential bands from New York City. The "Son" experienced a period of transformation from 1925 to 1928, when it evolved into the most popular music in Cuba. The American composer Ned Sublette insists, "This music is so essential to the Cuban character that you can't disentangle it from the history of the nation. The history of Cuban music is one of cultural collisions, forced migrations, of religions and revolutions." Shelter Theater presents two concerts featuring "Son Cubano" Saturday, August 22th at 7:30 pm and Saturday August 29th at 7:30 pm: Cubano Y Boleros.
