Literary Landmarks: An Exclusive Tour of Cleveland's Literary Past - a benefit for the youth of Lake Erie Ink
Explore Cleveland's rich literary history under fall foliage with Lolly the Trolley and one of the city's only nonprofits dedicated to creative writing. Lake Erie Ink: a writing space for youth's mission is to provide creative expression opportunities and academic support to youth in the Greater Cleveland community.

Itinerary

9:15am: Mingle over coffee and bagels at Lake Erie Ink (2843 Washington Boulevard in Cleveland Heights) before boarding Lolly the Trolley.  Once boarded on the trolley, embark on a guided tour of Cleveland and visit Karamu House, Langston Hughes' home, and the Hart Crane memorial. We will explore "place" as it contributes to a writer's influence and vision and learn about the fascinating lives of Hughes and Crane.

Crane, who wrote highly stylized modernist poetry has been hailed by playwrights, poets, and literary critics alike as being one of the most influential poets of his generation. He lived in Cleveland.

Hughes, a poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist, is one of the early innovators of jazz poetry and is best known as a leader of the Harlem Renaissance. He attended high school in Cleveland.

12:00pm: Luncheon and tour of the Cleveland Public Library, an architectural masterpiece that opened in 1925. This library is home to many "firsts," including the first woman to head a major US public library (Linda Anne Eastman) who was instrumental in opening up the shelves to the patrons for the first time (as opposed to librarians fetching the books.)

Luncheon + Keynote: "Giving Voice to Place" featuring Ellie Mallet. A local newspaper journalist for over 20 years, Mallet received The Ohio Excellence in Journalism Award in 1997. She wrote a column for the Cleveland Plain Dealer and has published two books, The Notion of Family and Tevye's Grandchildren: Rediscovering a Jewish Identity.  Mallet also taught a class on "Writing the Personal Essay" at the Cuyahoga County Library.

Tour + Luncheon: $125

Luncheon Only: $55
