The Beauty of Disability: Exploring Clinical work with Transabled Clients
Transabled clients have an intense need or desire to transition from being able-bodied to having a physical disability. Although most literature frames transability as a mental illness in which people choose to acquire a disability, many transabled clients are vocal about the deep inherent need rather than choice to become disable. The term, Body Identity Integrity Disorder (BIID), is another term to describe this community, but this term is rooted in pathologizing the experience. Numerous parallels between the transgender and transability communities exist, which can help clinician work affirmatively with transabled clients. Members in both communities may seek surgical modification of their bodies in order to gain congruency between their bodies and their identity; both may struggle with depression when their bodies do not match their internal experience; and both face discrimination and hatred. This workshop will introduce clinicians to working affirmatively with transabled patients.
