Understanding the Physical and Emotional Changes after Gender Confirming Surgery: Phalloplasty in Transgender Men
The World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) standards of care require a minimum of two letters writing in support of gender confirming surgery, but most mental health professionals do not have the training to properly determine whether or not a patient is ready for gender confirming surgery, write these letters, or support the patient through the surgery process. Phalloplasty in a surgery sometimes used by transgender men to create a penis using a flap from the forearm, leg, or back and requires a minimum of 2 operations. Recovery often happens in isolation due to the need to travel. The months immediately post-op can be a flurry of emotions: fear, excitement, anger, happiness, irritability, loneliness, elation, and sadness. Mental health professionals play a vital role in preparing for surgery as well as the recovery period. This workshop will discuss the emotional and physical aspects of the whole process from making the decision to have surgery to navigating dating post-surgery.
