Oceans Apart, Wagner and Gomes United in Music
Opera Dolce presents the operatic concert Oceans Apart: Wagner and Gomes United in Music at Good Shepherd-Faith Presbyterian Church, just one block from Lincoln Center. This unique concert program features the work of two brilliant 19th Century composers. The great German Romantic composer Richard Wagner revolutionized Germanic operatic and orchestral music. Carlos Gomes, the Brazilian composer who took Italy by storm, was the first New World composer to be a sensation in Europe. These two men came from different musical and geographic worlds, yet the selections to be presented complement each other beautifully. One can clearly hear how Maestro Gomes incorporated the elder Wagner's musical innovations into his very Italianate operas, and, in the process, influenced later composers.
Vocal selections will be performed by soloists Andrew Costello, Pamela Lloyd and Olga Bakali with Craig Ketter at the piano.
