Small Vineyards Italian Winemaker Dinner
Sommelier Tommy Thompson is constantly on the search for new small production wineries and enjoys sharing his new finds. His next "Taste with Tommy" will span two-days of "la dolce vita". It begins with a traditional Italian family dinner held on Friday, September 9th in the Orca Ballroom, paired with the top rated wines from both Antonio Sanguineti and Podere Ciona Wineries. Followed by an in-depth Small Vineyards Tour d'Italia on Saturday, September 10th in the Chinnook room.
The Wineries Antonio Sanguienneti was destined to be a winemaker. When Antonio was a young man, there was a dispute about the family land which left him without a vineyard, but that didn't discourage his dreams. He acquired the knowledge and passion for winemaking along with his steadfast determination to be the best. Sanguieneti's wines are reflective of his flamboyant personality - unique Italian wines that garner constant praise. He is known for bold, intelligent reds that simultaneously suggest control and grace. He is often referred to as Il Maestro; lending an ear and sage advice to many of Italy's winemakers or orchestrating a musical blend that would make Verdi proud. The Podere Ciona estate and vineyards are located in Chianti Classico, the original and oldest part of Tuscany's Chianti wine-growing region, symbolized by the Gallo Nero, or Black Rooster, a figure prominently featured on the authentication labels of locally produced wines. Podere Ciona is a winery steeped in family tradition. Franco Gastteschi and his son Lorenzo manage the vineyards and cellars, which are known for their Chianti Classico Riserva. There superior wines, are a result of keeping grape yields very low, averaging one bottle per vine with harvesting done exclusively by hand.
The Family Dinner In keeping with family tradition, Tulalip Executive Chef Perry Masciti recalls Sunday afternoon suppers at his Grandma Barbato's and Grandma Mascitti's homes. "Both Grandmas had very different styles of cooking, but same instinctive cooking from the soul attitude. It's their hands I remember. Their working hands said love to their family and friends a million times. Braciole is one of the courses for this special wine-dinner that bring me to that comfort place. I've put a few twists on the recipe, but Grandma's hands are always present," says Mascitti.
