ANYWHERE BUT HERE with Carmen Aguirre
Witness a revolutionary playwright's world.
A new play, a true story, a salsa lesson...
Anywhere But Here with Carmen Aguirre is an evening about finding freedom across borders, culture and art. The author of the award-winning play "The Refugee Hotel" and the bestseller "Something Fierce: Memoirs of a Revolutionary Daughter", Aguirre is a revolutionary writer we want to know more about. Escape into her world for a night. Witness scenes from her new play "Anywhere But Here". Get a guide to guns and 1970s radical feminism. Tap into the first-person experience of crossing one of the most dangerous borders in the world with Wendy Mendez, founder of HIJOS (Children of the Disappeared) in Guatemala. Explore moving migrant shrines created by community participants with master shrine builder Marina Szijarto (Night for All Souls at Mountain View Cemetery), inspired by the migrant shrines along the Mexico/US border. And join the rest of the audience and occupy the dance floor in a sizzling salsa lesson with Carmen, whose family brought cumbia to Vancouver in the '70s.
