Mesgana Dancers of Ethiopia Performing in Palo Alto, California
The Mesgana Dancers of Ethiopia, currently performing to enthusiastic audiences in a 15-city tour of the United States, come to Palo Alto on Friday, September 7! A troupe of 11 adorable girls from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the Mesgana Dancers present a family-friendly show with sights and sounds from across Ethiopia. This shoulder-shaking celebration of rhythm, costume and movement benefits educational programs for children in Ethiopia.
Last summer, The Mesgana Dancers of Ethiopia caused a sensation during their first visit to the U.S. Their inspiring story brings a message of hope for children around the world. Come see what everyone is still talking about!
The Mesgana Dancers of Ethiopia bring a message of hope and girl power - as well as a bridge-building, shoulder-shaking, spirit-moving celebration of dance.
Ranging in age from 7 to 13, the Mesgana Dancers perform traditional dances of their native Ethiopia, in costumes that reflect the country's richly diverse culture. Last year, the girls performed to sold-out crowds across the U.S. This time, they'll entertain and inspire while showcasing the transformative power of education in the lives of children.
With the support of sponsors in the United States, each of the 11 Mesgana girls attends school in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In a country where more than 50% of young girls cannot read and even fewer continue past secondary school, the Mesgana Dancers represent hope and optimism for Ethiopia's future.
The Mesgana Dancers' performance is an uplifting opportunity to support thousands of eager learners in Ethiopia. All proceeds benefit programs that support education and literacy for children in Ethiopia, a country where the average annual income is approximately $150.
Consider:
* $5: One child ticket buys 5 books for children in Ethiopia * $20: One adult ticket buys 4 school uniforms * $300: Sponsors a year's worth of schooling, including tuition, uniform and supplies
The Mesgana Dancers Celebrate Ethiopia Tour is co-produced by the Children of Ethiopia Educational Foundation (COEEF) and Ethiopia Reads. Based in Salt Lake City, COEEF facilitates the sponsorship of girls' education in schools in Ethiopia. COEEF's executive director, Norman Perdue, is the founder and director of The Mesgana Dancers. Visit www.coeef.org. Ethiopia Reads is a Denver-based non-profit organization that opens libraries and publishes books for children in Ethiopia. Founded in 2003 by Yohannes Gebregeorgis, Ethiopia Reads established the first free library for children in Ethiopia. This year, the library is expected to record more than 70,000 visits from boys and girls. Look for a feature on Ethiopia Reads in the September issue of Good Housekeeping Magazine, written by There Is No Me Without You author Melissa Fay Greene. Visit www.ethiopiareads.org.
