Ina May Gaskin - Birth Works: Why Don't We Know It?
Presented by the Midwives' Association of Washington State with major funding from Seattle's newest birth center, the Center for Birth.

THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT.

Doors will be locked 30 minutes after the lecture begins, so between 2 pm and 3:30 pm (or once the lecture is over) the doors will be locked. Once the doors are open, if you don't have a ticket but want to attend the book signing, you may come in for that.

Mothers, daughters, expecting couples, birth professionals.  All who are interested in the relevance of birth in our culture. Come enjoy an inspiring afternoon with Ina May Gaskin!

Sit back and enjoy two lively hours of wisdom and wit with "the mother of modern midwifery," as she discusses topics from her new book, Birth Matters, a spirited manifesta showing us how to trust women, value birth, nurture families, and reconcile modern life with a process as old as our species. Called "the most important person in maternity care in North America, bar none" by Marsden Wagner, M.D., M.S., former Director of Women' s and Children's Health, World Health Organization, Ina May Gaskin is likely "the world's most famous midwife."

Browse our birth fair of birth-related organizations and businesses and have Ina May sign your favorite book. Doors open at 12:30 for the birth fair and book purchases. Lecture from 1:30 to 3:30. Birth fair and book sales/signing continue till 4:30.

Quiet babes in arms are welcome. *If you have any questions about the suitability of this event for other children under 12, please feel free to call.

Q&A

Question: What time does she speak? not the full four hours, I'm assuming...
Answer: The lecture is from 1:30 to 3:30 with book-signing afterwards

Question: I have an 8 year old who has read Spiritual Midwifery and other birth books with me many times. May I bring her?
Answer: see complete answer to the second part of your question

Question: I would add that I'm not "bringing her along." She is eager to attend this event, and we would only stay for parts she and I agree are appropriate for her. This child gives every indication of wanting to be a midwife. Please allow us to come. Thank you.
Answer: Of course. For most children, this would not be an engaging talk. And perhaps some of the politics/history may not be as interesting to her. Much of the concern with children is regarding mindfulness of others if children are bored and don't want to sit still and listen

Question: Is it general admission? Trying to decide if my group of friends can each buy a ticket now or if one of us needs to buy several to sit together. thanks
Answer: Yes! General admission. No need to buy your seats as a block.

Question: I'd like to attend but if I do I'll have to bring my three month old along. I'm happy to step outside if he's not quiet/sleeping/nursing and rejoin once he's settled again. Is this practical? Would the seating situation allow for coming in and out like that?
Answer: nursing babies in arms are welcome...probably good to take an aisle seat towards the back in case he won't stay quiet for you. Happy to have you.

Question: Oh no! It's sold out - will there be any tickets sold at the door?
Answer: Sorry, but no....

Question: I just heard of this event and want to attend. But it says "sold out"? Is there any way I can still attend?
Answer: Sorry, but no....

Question: My daughter was taking me here for a Mother"s Day gift-she was under the impression that tickets would be sold at the door. Is there anymore room-perhaps even standing?
Answer: I don't know about standing room but I will ask Town Hall staff if that is allowed. We thought there would be tickets at the door. Never imagined it would sell out!

Question: Even though it's sold out can we come for the book signing?
Answer: I guess that would be fine. The lecture should be over at 3:30, and until it's over the doors of Town Hall will be locked. So you might wait till about 3:45 for the doors to reopen. Books will be sold in the Grand Hall and the book signing table will be there as well.

Question: Even though it's sold out can we come for the book signing?
Answer: Please see answer to last question

Question: Even though it's sold out can we come for the book signing?
Answer: Please see answer to last question

Question: Is standing room available?
Answer: I'm waiting for an answer from Town Hall about capacity, and I will post when I have it

Question: Has there been a decision made on allowing people to stand in the back?
Answer: Town Hall does not allow standing

Question: Since it is sold out and probably not much standing room available will there be an option of a podcast or way to view or listen to the lecture?
Answer: It's possible, but I don't know how quickly that will be available

Question: Since the event is sold out, will there be a podcast or way to listen/see the event?
Answer: It's possible, but I don't know how quickly that will be available

Question: Are they selling tickets at the door?
Answer: The event is sold out

Question: I had to list friend's names when I purchased a bundle of tickets, and now some of them will not be attending and others will attend in their stead. Will all the will-call tickets be listed under my name, or must I change the names in advance? I can't find my confirmation number to log on and do so, but my credit card got charged so I'm sure my purchase was complete...
Answer: Please send an email to info@washingtonmidwives.org and I will try to answer your question

Question: I see that the event is sold out and I have two extra tickets. The BPT page says that ID is required... would I be able to free up my tickets for someone else before tomorrow?
Answer: I am fine if you give a friend your extra tickets

Question: My sister and I both purchased two tickets for us so we have 2 extra. I see that the event is sold out and BPTix says that photo ID is required to match tickets held at will call. Is there any way to free up two of our tickets for someone else by tomorrow?
Answer: There are people on the Midwives' Association of WA Facebook page looking for tickets. You might contact them and pass along at the event

Question: My sister and I each purchased our tickets so now we have 2 extras. I see that photo ID is required for tickets held at will call. Is there a way to free up 2 of our tickets for someone else?
Answer: see below

Question: My printer is not working and I bought my ticket online. Will it be possible to show my confirmation email to get in or to go to will call?
Answer: Even if you can't print your ticket, you can give us your name.
