Goblin Market
CRITICS PRAISE GOBLIN MARKET!
"It's the perfect choice for those who prefer seasonal Halloween fare of a more classical, high-minded flavor...the performances deliver, as does the accompanying music. What matters most rings true." - Time Out Chicago

"There was no doubt that Stephanie Stockstill and Jennifer Grubb were amazing....this story theater production is one to see." -Gapers Block

"Laura (Stephanie Stockstill) and Lizzie (Jennifer T. Grubb) have incredible operatic ranges with which they sweetly harmonize and deftly trill." - New City Stage

"What makes Christina Rossetti's 1862 poem truly creepy is its lurid imagery, dark implications, and aura of sexual hysteria. All are present in this chamber-opera adaptation presented by Black Button Eyes Productions. Polly Pen's score is impressively sung." -Chicago Reader

"Goblin Market is an operatic feast of poetic verse...Stephanie Stockstill and Jennifer T. Grubb accompanied by a lively orchestra lift the production as they sing with tremendous passion and unforgettable voices." -TheatreWorld Internet Magazine

"We must not look at goblin men
We must not buy their fruits
Who knows upon what soil they fed
Their hungry thirsty roots?"
Goblin Market, Christina Rossetti

Black Button Eyes Productions (producer of Coraline the musical in 2014) brings this musical to the city of Chicago for the first time in over 15 years. Two adult sisters, Lizzie and Laura, return to their childhood home and relive the dark fantasies of their adolescence, in which goblin men capered and tempted them to sample forbidden fruits. When Laura succumbs to goblin blandishments, it is up to Lizzie to take a stand and save her sister's life. Blending haunting songs and story theater, this musical adaptation of the poem by Christina Rossetti spins a captivating spell.

Starring Jennifer T. Grubb and Stephanie Stockstill. Directed by Ed Rutherford, with music direction by Jeffrey Bouthiette.
