WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: The participants will become more knowledgeable regarding the types and structures of group therapy, and the skills necessary to implement them. This workshop will explore the core components of group format and composition, considering the interaction of stages of group development with leadership styles. We will explore emerging group practices that integrate cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal group dynamics, and mindfulness-based psychotherapy techniques within the framework of the biological/psychological/social perspectives relative to general mental health population. WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES: By the end of the workshop, participants will improve their skills and knowledge regarding therapeutic group formats and their applications: 1. Describe Operational Concepts regarding therapeutic groups: *Peer support group (self-help, Vet Dependent) *Support group (men's/women's, cancer survivors) *Target specific group support (SUD, SMI, hearing voices) *Psycho-educational group (CBT, DBT, Mindfulness) *Experiential groups (ropes course, Outward Bound, Equine Therapy etc.) *Group Therapy (process group psychotherapy) *Static (closed), dynamic or drop-in (open) group participation design 2. Explore personal interface between current skill set and the demands of group designs i.e., characteristics, leadership styles, and techniques of various group processes. 3. Explore relevance the assessment process for client placement in therapy groups, including interviews, group placement options, and paper/pencil assessment tools. Discuss prescreening, selecting members, and group composition for more successful groups. 4. Review "learning styles" as this clarifies and impacts group design, process and leadership style. 5. Starting off well: issues to address in the first sessions; engagement, review the process of creating and setting agreements for rules, roles, confidentiality and adherence to program protocols. 6. Stages of group development (beginning, middle and ending) and common issues groups face: Reflect upon the cultivation of skills, duties and concepts that embodies successful facilitation and group leadership. Positive ways to handle group conflict and other potential problems, setting individual and group goals, using group activities and exercises, coordinating group work with clients treatment team.
