Liederabend: An evening of German song with Erin G. McCarthy, soprano, and Susan McDaniel, piano
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
A native of the Pacific Northwest, dramatic soprano ERIN G. MCCARTHY is a dynamic performer who brings a steely, soaring voice and an "elegant, sparkling" (Willamette Week 2003) presence to the concert, opera, and recital stage.
Erin has appeared in fully-staged operas with Longwood Opera, MassTheatrica, Bel Canto Northwest Vocal Institute, Willamette Concert Opera, and Eugene Opera. Some of her favorite operatic roles performed include Mimi in Puccini's La Boheme, Mother in Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors, Donna Anna in Mozart's Don Giovanni, Alice Ford in Verdi's Falstaff, the First Lady in Mozart's The Magic Flute, and the title role in Puccini's Suor Angelica. She has appeared as a concert soloist with the Salem Philharmonic, the Braintree Chorale, Nashoba Valley Chorale, the Paul Madore Chorale, Summersing, Trinity Consort, and the Masterworks Chorale. Her best-loved concert appearances include singing the soprano solos in the Brahms Requiem, the Verdi Requiem, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, and Carmina Burana.
For three consecutive years Erin was a member of the International Bachakademie Stuttgart Festivalensemble, with whom she performed under the baton of acclaimed conductor Helmuth Rilling at venues as diverse as the European Musicfest Stuttgart, the Rheingau Musik Festival, and as part of a performance series at the Herodes Atticus theater at the Acropolis in Athens. She has been honored with awards by the Gibner King Vocal Competition (2001) and the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions (2001, 2005), and was a semi-finalist in the 2014 international Elizabeth Connell Prize competition for dramatic sopranos.
Erin has frequently collaborated in recital with soprano Natalie Gunn, mezzo-soprano Sarah Maines, and pianist Susan McDaniel. In 2014 Erin, Natalie, Susan, and Sarah presented 'A Feast For The Senses: A Vocal Chamber Music Recital' at concert venues throughout Oregon including Willamette University, Linfield College, and the First United Methodist Church in downtown Portland. Also in 2014 Erin, Sarah, and Susan presented their program of works by American composers 'Shadow of the Blues' at the historic Old Church, where they performed the West Coast premier of Hair Emergency!, an award-winning song cycle by Richard Pearson Thomas. In 2007 she performed an original series of songs by composer Jeffrey Brody as part of a solo recital in Boston and later appeared with Mr. Brody on a recording of the same works along with his Apache Wedding Song, which was composed in 2006 with Erin's voice in mind.
Erin's training includes intensive vocal study with the masterful Ruth Dobson at Portland State University and Metropolitan Opera star Patricia Craig in Boston, as well as coaching work with Richard Bower and Jeffrey Brody. During her time at PSU Erin worked with international opera legends Sherrill Milnes, Ellen Faull, and Marilyn Horne.
SUSAN MCDANIEL has appeared widely as a soloist and chamber musician, including recitals in France, Germany, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic. She received a B.A. in music from Linfield College, where she studied with Jill Timmons, and a M.M. in vocal accompanying from Manhattan School of Music, where she was a student of Warren Jones. While at Manhattan, she also studied chamber music with Isidore Cohen and Ruth Laredo and Baroque performance practice with Kenneth Cooper. Susan has been a member of the music staff at Seattle Opera, Portland Opera, and Utah Festival Opera as well as music director and pianist for the San Diego Opera Ensemble, Off-Center Opera (Seattle), and Puget Sound Concert Opera.
She teaches and accompanies at Linfield College and the University of Portland, and is the resident pianist for Thursdays at Three, All Classical Portland's live performance radio show.
